You’ve likely heard of Flash Fiction. Well, there’s also a genre called Flash Non-fiction. True stories, but super short. Think: 100 words-1000 words. I’m actually giving the same workshop twice. The only difference is the day/time, length of the course; and host:
Writers Federation of New Brunswick’s will be four weeks, Saturday mornings from 9-11 AST starting Feb. 7th. Click here for more info.
Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society’s will be six weeks, on Thursday afternoons from 1-3 pm AST, starting Jan. 29. Click here for more info.
Along with flexing your writing muscles, I’ll also provide markets for flash non-fiction each week. I’ve set a personal goal of writing and submitting a flash NF piece once a week for a year. I can’t believe I said that out loud, but you heard it (read it) here. Will start by writing/submitting one flash NF story between Jan 1-7. Eh-yep!
This is a new venture for me and I’ve been having a blast learning how to write short. One thing I’ve learned: it’s not about condensing. It’s about writing with constraints. It’s about use of white space. It’s about building a world without a whole lot of text. It’s about … hair pulling and gnashing of teeth. And grinning a lot. And the rush of nailing a story in 100 words (or maybe 250 or 1000).
I am currently mid-air having been out of the country for 30 days. Which I never planned to do. This journey could easily run 10,000 words. I’m trying to do it in 100 words. Might take me a year to do so. Matters not. Plan to figure it out.
Hope everyone has a joyful December, a Merry Merry, and Happy Hannukah.
