Hello Sandra,
I travelled through Eastern Europe from August to December 1989 and naively stumbled into history far more than I would have had a been older and wiser. I used David Stanley's guide almost everyday, but a friend lost my copy (and the copious notes and addresses written in the margins) a year later. At this time, I'm writing of memories of that time (am not crazy about the word "memoir") using my journals, but I have a number of questions I'd like to ask of David.
Could I ask to be put in touch with him? By perhaps forwarding to him this e-mail asking for contact?
If it helps to bolster my credibility as someone who really made this trip, I can state that I set out with Shoestring and Let's Go, but threw out my copy of Let's Go in Brasov, Romania a few weeks into my trip because I realized that the Let's Go author had copied, almost verbatim the official state tourist fabrications. Thereafter, I used Shoestring only!
Thank you for your help, Dickie Wallace

Thanks for popping into view Debbie! Pending good weather, how often do you fly to Sable? Can you provide information about getting there and back? Must put that on my "to-do" list.

Interesting to see how Wendy came to write her book, but it is worth noting that the government does not presently limit the number of visitors to Sable Island - the cost and weather do that. I fly the Sable Island aircraft and have never heard of anyone who made a request to visit Sable get turned down. Having said that, there are lots of folks who book and can't go because of weather, and since they are usually from away, they can't sit in Halifax for a week or two, so they end up cancelling altogether.

I remember Bob Dennison and the Continental from my visit at the end of January 1998.I was not fortunate enough to talk with Nell. But the casual cigar box and the relaxing view live on in my heart . I returned last February(2011) and was sadden to see that the self service bar was gone along with the pristine environment . Now there are great BBQ meals and drinks served seaside but for some reason there are not enough trash cans to keep the place as lovely as it once was. I did get a kick out of a bird immediately helped itself to my rice and beans when I put my plate down to make a comfortable seat . I love Tortola . Thank you for posting your experience and thoughts.
